 While addressing to session he said

"We need a revolution in our vision of our future. The Covid-19 pandemic and the climate crisis should drive home the message to all rich and poor, weak or powerful that their destinies are intertwined. We will perish or survive together,"

 

What is IFAD?

IFAD stands for International Fund for Agricultural Development.
 
The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) is an international financial institution and a specialized agency of the United Nations dedicated to eradicating poverty and hunger in rural areas of developing countries.

It was established in December 1977, Rome, Italy. IFAD is a UN agency
The current President of IFAD is Gilbert F. Houngbo, whose first term ends on 31 March 2021

Function of IFAD

The basic function of IFAD is to invest in rural people, empowering them to increase their food security, improve the nutrition of their families and increase their incomes. Also to help them build resilience, expand their businesses and take charge of their own development.

Members of IFAD 

International Fund for Agricultural Development has 177 Member States comprised of developing, middle and high-income countries from all regions of the world who are dedicated to eradicating poverty in rural areas. 

Any member of United Nations including any of  its specialized agencies or the International Atomic Energy Agency.can get membership of IFAD, 

How Funds are raised?

IFAD International Fund for Agricultural Development does not impose mandatory annual assessments of contributions from its Member States, but nearly 100 members voluntarily support the Fund through financial contributions as a sign of their commitment to IFAD

Since 1978, IFAD continuously providing grants and low-interest loans to projects that have reached an estimated 518 million people.

IFAD's Services

IFAD has provided around US$28 billion in co-financing and funding from domestic sources for rural development, and contributed an additional US$20.9 billion in loans and grants.

IFAD has supported 1,069 programmes and projects in partnership with 125 recipient governments empowered approximately 483 million people.

All these programmes support common and needy people to grow more food, better manage their land and natural resources, learn new skills, start small businesses, build strong organizations and gain a voice in decisions that affect their lives. 

Due to IFAD's services 

-Families are able to feed themselves and contribute to overall food security parents and children have decent nutrition and health 

-Economic security is created in rural communities 

-Women, indigenous peoples and other disadvantaged groups are empowered

-Young women and men are choosing to build businesses in their rural communities rural people are becoming more resilient to climate shocks

 Formation of Governing Council of IFAD

 Governing Council consists of all of IFAD’s Member States and meets annually It's main decision-making body of IFAD

 IFAD's Forty-Fourth Session 

The forty-fourth session of International Fund for Agricultural Development taking place on 17 and 18 February 2021. It will focus on the overarching theme Rural development: a prerequisite for global resilience. The lessons of the COVID-19 crisis provide an opportunity to reflect on current development approaches and reconfirm that IFAD’s model has provided solutions to build a better rural future.
